Popular Home Remedies for Toenail Fungus

Do They Actually Work?

tea tree oil

Tea Tree Oil

Has mild antifungal properties, but results are inconsistent and typically limited.

Vicks VapoRub

May slightly improve nail appearance in mild cases, but usually does not fully eliminate fungal infection.

Vinegar Soaks

May help reduce moisture and odor, but there is little evidence it cures nail fungus.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Can disinfect the surface of the nail but usually does not penetrate deeply enough to treat infection.

Baking Soda

Helpful for moisture control and foot odor, but not considered a reliable cure.

Over-the-Counter Antifungal Creams

Often ineffective for thick toenails because medication struggles to penetrate the nail plate.

Toenail fungus can be difficult to treat because the infection lives underneath the nail. An evaluation by a podiatrist helps determine whether the nail is truly fungal and which treatment options are most likely to work.

Don’t Ignore Thick Toenails

Thick or discolored nails are not just a cosmetic issue. They can cause:

  • Pain in shoes

  • Pressure on surrounding skin

  • Spread of fungal infection to other nails

Proper diagnosis is the first step toward effective treatment. We evaluate nail conditions regularly and help patients determine whether the problem is trauma, fungus, or another underlying condition.

The right diagnosis leads to the right treatment!
